[Contents] The Porsche 911 series has been in production since 1964, with today's 992 being the 8th generation. The most epoch-making event in its history came when the 5th generation, the 996, introduced in 1997, switched from the previous air-cooled engine to a water-cooled engine.
Since then, 911 models from the 4th generation and earlier, equipped with air-cooled engines, have increasingly become collector's cars.
Hot Wheels chose as its subject the 911 GT2, based on the 4th-generation 993, popular among fans as the last air-cooled model, modified to meet the FIA's GT2 regulations.
It was powered by a twin-turbo engine producing 450 horsepower with rear-wheel drive, and the interior was kept spartan with comfort features minimized wherever possible; fewer than 60 units were produced combined across both the competition and road-car versions. The Boxster is Porsche's entry-level model, introduced in 1996—a 2-seat open-top sports car with a mid-mounted engine.
The Cayman is a closed-body variant derived from the Boxster, and the Hot Wheels model is based on the current (3rd-generation) high-performance GT4 version, equipped with the 4-liter engine (420 horsepower) from its big-brother model, the 911.
