[Contents] Subaru (then Fuji Heavy Industries) succeeded in turning around its struggling business with the big hit of the new Legacy model launched in 1989. After that, the Impreza, released in 1992 as the successor to the Leone, which was the company's previous flagship model, was also well-received, and the third arrow that Subaru shot was the Forester, released in 1997.
The Forester adopted a package that combined the Legacy's 4WD system and horizontally opposed engine with a tall station wagon body that was comfortable to live in. It could be said to be the forerunner of what we now call crossovers and SUVs, and has won new Subaru fans around the world.
The new mold item that Hot Wheels has added to their Modern Classics lineup this time is the STi, a sports grade version of the second-generation Forester that was released in 2002.
The STi was equipped with an engine tuned up to 265 horsepower, a 6-speed M/T, a special sports suspension, increased body rigidity, aerodynamic parts, high-performance brakes, etc. Although it was a Japan-only model, it is now recognized worldwide, as can be seen from its appearance as a Hot Wheels model.
