[Contents] The Savanna is a mid-sized car (for the Japanese market) exclusively powered by a rotary engine (RE) that was released by Mazda (known as Toyo Kogyo at the time) in 1971.
The name Savanna was not used overseas, and the car was given the name RX-3.
Instead of the up and down movement of cylindrical pistons in a normal reciprocating engine, the RE gets its power from the rotational movement of irregular pistons called rice ball-shaped rotors, and at the time it was synonymous with Mazda's advanced technology. The RE was compact and easy to generate power, and the Savanna was highly praised as a base car for competition vehicles.
Symbolizing this is the fact that the Savanna undermined the stronghold of the Skyline GT-R, which had been invincible in Japanese touring car races from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, and eventually replaced it in 1972 (the GT-R withdrew from the competition).
Due to this image, it became popular for ordinary Savanna users to customize their own cars to look like race cars, but at the time, the works over fenders that race cars were equipped with to accommodate thick tires were illegal, so the car also had an outlaw vibe.
It is finished in a color scheme based on the Liberty Walk vehicles, which have been customized to look like the cars of Yoshimi Katayama, a well-known Hot Wheels RE user.
